Sizing up
The weight of your speakers is crucial in determining the right load cells for perfect isolation within the audio waveband. Our carefully calibrated Loadcells ensure the ideal spring-mass load, allowing your speakers to “float” and achieve comprehensive isolation from external vibrations.
Once this balance is achieved, you’ll select a platform that fits your speakers as shown in the diagram. If there is a slight overhang at the front or back, this may be acceptable. For speakers that don’t fit any standard platforms, we offer a bespoke service to create a custom stand that perfectly suits your setup.

More Than a Spring: The Air-Damped Advantage
Townshend Seismic isolation is not simply a conventional spring support. Each Load Cell is carefully matched to the weight it carries, so the spring compresses into its correct operating range and achieves the low resonant frequency needed for effective broadband isolation. Around the spring is a flexible rubber air-damping jacket with a precisely controlled air outlet. As the spring moves, air is forced through this opening, dissipating energy and quickly controlling oscillation. This means the system combines the freedom of a soft spring with the stability of a damper, reducing both floor-borne vibration and the prolonged bouncing associated with ordinary undamped springs.
Why Spring Compression Matters
A spring only performs optimally when it is carrying the correct load. If it is too lightly loaded, it remains too stiff and cannot achieve the low resonant frequency needed for effective isolation. If it is overloaded, it has insufficient travel and its performance is compromised. Townshend Seismic Load Cells are individually matched to the weight of the equipment they support, ensuring each spring operates at its optimum compression. This allows the isolator to achieve an exceptionally low resonant frequency, so vibration is progressively attenuated across virtually the entire range of frequencies that affect audio equipment, rather than only at higher frequencies like many conventional isolation materials.
frequently asked questions
What are Townshend Audio Seismic Adjustable Bars, and how do they work?
Are the Seismic Adjustable Bars sonically worse than the Seismic Isolation Podium?
What speakers are compatible with the Seismic Adjustable Bars?
How do I install the Seismic Adjustable Bars?
What sonic improvements can I expect from the Seismic Adjustable Bars?
- Transparency: Clearer vocals and instruments with a “holographic” soundstage. “Voices and instruments now have a clearer and natural presentation.”
- Dynamics: Tighter, more defined bass without boom. “The bass is strong and powerful… a distinct improvement right through the frequency range.”
- Bandwidth: Wider, deeper soundstage with precise imaging. “Separation of instruments much better, clarity, better detail.”
The bars also reduce structure-borne feedback, allowing high-volume listening without disturbing neighbors.
Can the bars be used on any floor type?

Why Is Spring Compression Crucial for Townshend Seismic Isolation?
How does Townshend Seismic Isolation differ from conventional rigid couplers?
Townshend Audio’s mechanical low pass filter exemplifies true decoupling, offering a level of vibration isolation that far surpasses conventional attenuation methods. By effectively isolating components from vibrations down to below 3 Hz, Townshend ensures that high-fidelity audio systems perform at their best, free from the distortions caused by external vibrations.
