Description

Townshend Maximum Supertweeter

The Townshend Maximum Supertweeter is designed to extend the high-frequency response of a loudspeaker system far beyond the conventional audible range.

But that does not mean its purpose is simply to produce “more treble”.

The Maximum Supertweeter was developed around a more interesting question: how much of the timing, transient and harmonic information contained in music is lost when a loudspeaker’s bandwidth is limited?

You Don’t Listen to 90 kHz. You Listen to Music in Time.

Human hearing is commonly described as extending to approximately 20 kHz, with the upper limit reducing with age. This is normally established using continuous test tones.

Music is very different.

A cymbal strike, plucked string, piano hammer or trumpet note begins with an extremely rapid transient followed by a complex pattern of fundamentals, harmonics and reflections. Real musical events therefore contain information extending far beyond a simple sine-wave description of hearing.

The Maximum Supertweeter extends the loudspeaker system’s high-frequency response to approximately 90 kHz, with the aim of preserving more of this extremely fast musical information.

The objective is not to make the system brighter.

It is to help it behave more like the original musical event.

The Brain Listens to Timing

Our auditory system does considerably more than detect frequency. It is extraordinarily sensitive to when sounds arrive.

One fascinating example is the precedence effect.

When a sound reaches us directly and is followed moments later by reflections from the surrounding room, the brain does not necessarily perceive every arrival as a separate sound. Instead, the first-arriving sound strongly influences where we perceive the source to be, while later reflections contribute information about the surrounding acoustic space.

This ability is fundamental to the way we locate instruments and voices and perceive the size and character of real acoustic environments.

It demonstrates an important principle for high-fidelity reproduction:

Frequency tells us what is present. Timing helps the brain understand where and when it happened.

The precedence effect itself does not demonstrate that ultrasonic frequencies are consciously audible. What it does demonstrate is just how important very small timing differences are to human spatial hearing.

For Townshend, that makes transient behaviour and bandwidth particularly interesting.

Why a Fast Ribbon?

At the heart of the Maximum Supertweeter is an extremely lightweight aluminium ribbon operating within a powerful magnetic field.

Unlike a conventional dome tweeter, there is no separate voice coil attached to a heavier diaphragm. The ribbon itself forms the moving conductor.

Its exceptionally low moving mass allows it to accelerate and stop extremely quickly.

This matters because music does not consist of continuous tones. It consists of constantly changing events.

The strike of a cymbal, the initial bowing of a string and the leading edge of a piano note all contain rapid changes that help define the identity and position of the

Townshend Audio F1 Fractal Interconnect – The Pinnacle of Audio Transparency
Step into a world of uncompromised sound with the Townshend Audio F1 Fractal Interconnect (starting at £771 for RCA, £824 for XLR). Handmade in the UK by the visionary engineers at Townshend Audio, this isn’t just a cable—it’s a breakthrough in high-fidelity audio engineering, designed to deliver music with a purity and clarity that redefines what’s possible. Priced for the discerning listener who demands the ultimate in transparency, the F1 Fractal Interconnect is the crown jewel of Townshend’s 40-year legacy, promising a connection so true you’ll hear your system as if for the first time.
The Fractal-Wire™ Difference
At the core of the F1 Fractal Interconnect lies Townshend’s proprietary Fractal-Wire™ treatment, a revolutionary process that elevates this cable far beyond its predecessors. Building on the success of their acclaimed Isolda EDCT (Enhanced Deep Cryogenic Treatment), Townshend spent years perfecting this secret technique, blending it with Enhanced DCT to create a conductor that’s astonishingly silent and pure. Unlike standard copper or silver wires, Fractal-Wire™ strips away coloration and distortion, offering a level of transparency that’s unmatched in the industry. The details of this process remain a closely guarded secret, but the proof is in the listening—until you’ve experienced Fractal-Wire™, you haven’t heard a truly neutral cable.
Handcrafted Precision for Sonic Perfection
Every F1 Fractal Interconnect is meticulously assembled by hand, because only human precision can achieve the minimal contact with insulation that this design demands. The signal flows through an ultra-thin, polyester-coated enameled copper wire, spiraled tightly around a thicker bare copper ground. This close-knit geometry eliminates external electric fields, banishing hum in valve amplifiers and blocking radio frequency interference (RFI) with ruthless efficiency. Encased in a lightweight, flexible translucent tube with an air dielectric, the conductors are suspended in near-perfect isolation, ensuring your music remains untouched by the cable itself. Terminated with industry-leading Neutrik Profi RCA plugs (featuring spring-loaded ground collars) or Neutrik XLR plugs for balanced setups, the F1 delivers a connection that’s as reliable as it is revelatory.
A Sonic Revelation
Plug in the F1 Fractal Interconnect, and prepare for a transformation. Audiophiles rave about its ability to widen the soundstage, deepen the bass, and unveil details lost to lesser cables. The sound is fast, clear, and liquid—offering a “dark” quality that lets you peer into the recording, walking among the musicians with uncanny precision. Bass extends with robust authority, treble sparkles without harshness, and the midrange blooms with lifelike texture. Whether connecting your DAC to your amp or linking your preamp to your power stage, this interconnect reveals the soul of your system, exposing every nuance without adding or subtracting a thing. Pair it with Townshend’s Allegri+ preamp or Fractal F1 speaker cables for a synergy that’s pure magic.
Built for the Elite, Priced for the Passionate
The F1 Fractal Interconnect isn’t for everyone—it’s for those who chase the pinnacle of audio fidelity. Available in lengths from 1m to 5m (custom options on request), it caters to setups of any scale. The RCA version starts at £771, while the balanced XLR, with its dual Fractal-treated strands and drain wire, begins at £824—remarkable value for a cable that outperforms competitors costing twice as much. Reviewers call it “a superstar” and “the final frontier in connectivity,” and customers echo the sentiment: “I didn’t think it could get this good” (Janine, UK). With a 5-year warranty backing its UK craftsmanship, this is an investment in sound you can trust.

Why Choose Isolda Speaker Cables?

Most speaker cables in the audio industry overlook the science of transmission line theory, resulting in micro-reflections that smear and veil the purity of sound. These reflections bounce between the source and speaker, muddying the music you love. The Isolda DCT Speaker Cable eliminates this issue through its unique geometry, closely matching the impedance of your amplifier and speakers. The result? A crystal-clear soundstage, lifelike 3d imaging, and seismic bass that transforms your listening experience.

Engineered for Audiophile Perfection

Crafted by hand in small batches, Townshend Isolda cables feature closely spaced, insulated flat copper conductors encased in a polyester braid sheath. This design makes them virtually immune to Radio Frequency Interference (RFI), ensuring a silent background that lets every note shine. Whether you’re listening to intricate classical compositions or powerful rock anthems, the Isolda delivers sound so natural, it feels like the artist is in the room.

Pure, Uncolored Sound

The Isolda DCT’s impedance-matched design (8 ohms) eliminates signal reflections, delivering music exactly as recorded. The Ear praises it as “one of the best speaker cables money can buy” for its neutral, fatigue-free sound.
